8:30 a.m. Charlie walks into class, breathless after chasing his friends around the playground. “I love to run! One of my favorite days was the Mile Run. All the Lower Elementary kids ran a whole mile at a park in Evergreen. Then we celebrated with popsicles. I was very tired!”
What do you like most about being a second year student?
Well, I’m older now and so I get to help out the first years. That’s a lot of fun. But I’m in the middle, so the third years get to help me out. Sometimes I help them out, too. It just works that way here.
What are you going to be when you grow up?
I want to be a police officer. I think it would be fun to help people and ride around in a police car. I’m not sure if you need to know a lot about math to be a police officer. My teacher says that you need math for everything, so, well, I probably will need it!
12:00 p.m. “I just love lunch and recess. They have a new lunch program here; it tastes really good. A lot of kids order it. I usually still bring lunch from home though. The new grass playing field is AWESOME! When it’s nice out we eat outside and then…straight to the playground!”
What is your favorite subject?
My very favorite subject is math. I think I’m pretty good at it. I especially like to do the checker board. It’s fun, but you’re also learning at the same time! I like to be able to choose what I’m working on. Some days I do a LOT of math!
What do you like most about MSE?
A bunch of things. My teachers are really great. I’ve loved all of them but especially Liz. I had her when I was in Primary. She was really nice and super patient. Sometimes I can be goofy at school; I like to tell jokes and stuff, but she never got mad at me! I also like that we don’t have to sit at desks. I think that would be boring. We get to go on tons of great trips. I can’t wait for our overnight trip in the spring. We’re going to Deer Creek. It’s supposed to be really fun!
4:00 p.m. Charlie pulls in his driveway at home and runs inside to change into his soccer uniform. “I play soccer, baseball and golf. Everyone in my family plays golf…well, just the boys. My mom and baby sister don’t play. My mom is a really good soccer player. She played when she was little. I want to play soccer for Colorado College some day.”
