8:30 a.m.
Lucas and his baby sister drop their older brother, Mateo, off at school and then get to spend the morning with mom at home. “A lot of times I play with my cats, Louie and Connor. Louie is a really good boy, but Connor is naughty! My mom likes to play chase with me. It’s so funny! I play outside before lunch with my friend. He’s only three though.”
12:30 p.m.
Lucas is back at school, and this time it’s his turn to jump out of the car and head upstairs to his classroom.
What do you like about your school?
I have THREE teachers! Their names are Sara, Jamee, and Miss Ruth Ann. Jamee, when she smiles, is so beautiful! She’s always happy. I like to ask my teachers questions. They like to show me how to do a work. Then I can do it. Sometimes they let me do a work with a friend; but only when I do a one-person work first!
2:35 p.m.
Lucas sits comfortably on the floor, concentrating on learning the names of the continents as he’s tracing and punching out the shape of South America. When all the continents are finished, he will put them together to create the whole world.
Students work with maps at every level of their Montessori experience. At each level, works increase in complexity, always moving from the concrete to the abstract.
You’re going to be an Extended Dayer next year! Are you excited about that?
I can’t wait until I can be an Extended Dayer next year! Then I can play on Mateo’s playground! Extended Dayers learn how to count up to a thousand. They get to use all the golden number beads and count to a thousand using the long chains.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Five.
3:00 p.m.
Do you have any other things you like to do?
Yes, I love Tae Kwon Do. I have a yellow belt. I also like to EAT! My dad is a chef and he makes cheesy noodles with sauce. My favorite food is turkey chicken.
- The teachers always listen to you and you feel like you have them to yourself. I also have tons of great friends here. We do so many fun things together! We just did a bike-a-thon that raised almost $9,000 for AfricAid. That's amazing!
