Middle School
We love Middle School students!
Designed to meet their developmental needs, our 6th – 8th year program is a combination of challenging academic preparation and experiential education. Individualized math groups, integrated humanities, hands-on science, and a wide-array of specials and electives comprise the school schedule.
Each semester, we offer over ten electives featuring such subjects such as mock trials, portraiture, orchestra, Student Council, and clay animation. All students participate in physical activities such as swing dancing, yoga, and floor hockey. Sixth year students take Latin as part of their Humanities Studies, while seventh and eighth year students participate in a rigorous Spanish language program. All students complete coursework in art history, music history, applied technology, and global studies. Grade level field trips, such as the eighth year Gray’s Peak climb, foster teamwork and build community during the first month of school. The entire student body attends a weeklong science-focused trip in the fall, as well as hut trips in the winter. Eighth year students also participate in the Global Citizenship Action Project in New York.
Students’ self-esteem is fostered through academic success as well as “real life” learning through internships, mentorships, service learning projects in the community, participation in school businesses, and the leadership opportunities that a small, nurturing school affords them. The faculty builds relationships with every student and they expect them to be held accountable for their own learning in and out of the classroom. We believe that the genuine support our faculty offers their students serves to buoy them through the vulnerable Middle School years.
After completing the MSE Middle School, students consistently demonstrate their readiness to excel in any high school. Our graduates report that they are confident and well prepared in their schoolwork. The high schools they attend tell us that MSE graduates are the first students to raise their hands in class to offer their insights, advocate for themselves with teachers, and get involved in sports, community service and other extra curricular activities. In short, they become leaders in their high schools, colleges, and workplaces because of their experiences at MSE.
