The Montessori Toddler Community early education program is a developmentally responsive, dynamic environment where young children are free to investigate and explore their worlds. They are engaged in age-appropriate works that allow children to learn by doing and develop the independence and self-mastery that is just beginning to develop at this age.
The toddler brain is developing rapidly and that’s why your toddler is always on the go! A substantial body of research shows that children in the right kind of learning environment at this age can achieve higher academic and social skills throughout their lives. These academic gains set the foundation for a love of learning for a lifetime.
The Montessori Toddler Communities are intentionally designed to meet the child’s rapidly growing emotional and cognitive abilities. This is a formative period for the development of personality, independence, trust, focus, and problem solving. Children are free to explore by using materials that emphasize experimentation and investigation of the natural world. The materials are designed to develop sensory perception, as well as motor, language, and math skills. The Montessori Toddler Communities are an important way to get them ready for the Primary Program.

The Toddler Community is also an authentic introduction to developing positive social interactions. Grace and courtesy lessons foster sharing, taking turns, and building compassion. Activities are designed to encourage group interaction, independence, and increased self-confidence. Above all, toddlers love being in an environment that is rich in materials that they can touch and explore and where they are surrounded by nurturing adults and engaged in making new friends!
At MSE, students from 12 months (and walking well) to three years receive all of the benefits of the Montessori Toddler Program. The Toddler Program is a five-morning a week program at our Troutdale Campus, from 8:45am to 11:45am, and at our Marshdale Campus from 8:15am to 11:15am. The student/faculty ratio is 9:2 at Troutdale and 10/2 at Marshdale. The children are not expected to be toilet-trained to enroll in the program.
