Montessori School of Evergreen

Michelle Rogers

Lower Elementary Lead Teacher and Program Coordinator

It was after having my son that I truly felt a calling to work with children. Earning a B.S. in Multicultural Education with a concentration in Spanish, I began my career teaching young elementary students in traditional settings in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. I began instructing teachers in standards based guided reading, working with Teaching for Excellence, and earning a Math Recovery certification. When working at a school in Carbondale, CO, I was entranced by the Montessori students that were a part of the school at that time. It spoke to me very strongly as I experienced continued limitations in the traditional setting, but I had no idea the depth of the philosophy and its focus on the reverence for the child.

It was in 2008 when I answered a newspaper ad for a primary assistant at MSE that I would start a new journey in education that would guide me to be a better educator, parent and human. After that year I began training at the Montessori Education Center of the Rockies(MECR), earning a credential for lower elementary, from the American Montessori Society, with a credential in upper elementary to follow. MSE has been incredibly supportive with continued training including Orton-Gillingham, Sarah Ward/executive functioning, writing and many workshops to support learning differences.

After a few years in the lower elementary classroom, I returned to supporting adults and began coaching other new Montessori elementary guides as a field consultant, moving to instruction and then administration as the elementary coordinator at MECR. And even when educating adults, it is the light of being with children every day that provides the essence of the work for me. It is an honor and gift to work with the elementary child - so full of curiosity, humor and life! The extended family/community of MSE is uniquely supportive and extremely special, composed of committed, compassionate and incredible people for whom I am grateful.

Celebrating, sharing and embodying this philosophy for parents, teachers and children is a continued guiding light as we all work together to provide children with an education in service to releasing their potential and positively impacting our world.
